The 10 books teachers want your child to read!

Classics such as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and The Chronicles of Narnia remain relevant for primary school children, When it comes to what teachers think school children should read, the classics continue to dominate the reading list for primaryschool children.




Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory tops a list of must-read novels, selected by 500 teachers for the NationalAssociation for the Teaching of English and the Times Educational Supplement (TES).

The book, which was published 51 years ago, beat Goodnight Mister Tom, which was released in 1981, and Lewis Carroll's Victorian masterpiece, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, to the top spot.

The newest book on the list, Julia Donaldson's The Gruffalo, was published in 1999.



Dahl, who appears years after year in teachers' lists of preferred classroom reading, continues to prove popular. He is the only author to have two books in the list, with his 1988 novel Matilda in fourth place. Earlier this year, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory topped areader survey of 50 bookschildren should read before they are 16.

The TES list was released to encourage children to complete their childhood literary education before goingto secondary school in September.

Earlier this year, comedian-turned-author David Walliams was shown to be the most popular author among primary school children after his novels Demon Dentist and Awful Auntie toppedbestseller lists. However, he failed to make the grade for this list.




JK Rowling, whose Harry Potterstories regularly appear in lists of children's favourite books, was also overlooked.
