Health care associated infections (HAIs) are infections that are contracted while receiving care in a hospital or clinic. HAIs can affect hundreds of millions of patients globally each year. In China, 3-10% of the 115 million inpatients each year experience at least one HAI during their hospital stay. Nursing staff are key to preventing HAIs and ensuring the well-being of patients while receiving care.

One example of an HAI is Clostridium difficile (CDI), which is a bacteria that can cause severe watery diarrhea. Although CDI can be found in the community, hospitalized patients who are being treated in an intensive care unit are particularly at risk of CDI due to having underlying health conditions and receiving a larger number of antibiotics. CDI can quickly spread from one patient to another through contaminated hands, medical instruments, and the environment. US CDC is collaborating with hospitals in China to better understand how often CDI occurs and how to prevent it.  Since nurses work closely with patients, they can help make sure that the environment is clean, adhere to proper hand hygiene for all patients, and, help implement appropriate infection control measures when CDI does occur. In our collaboration, we are working with these hospitals to help train nurses and others to improve routine infection control activities. In this way, nurses can help prevent unnecessary HAI transmission among hospitalized patients.
