昨日,国王君和Tom君已经结束了上海巡讲站,以下是巡讲系列之-上海站内容:

Day 1-3

After saying our goodbyes to my parents, wecrammed into the giant Emirates Boeing 777 in Washington DC and took off forDubai. Following the 13 hour flight, wehad two hours to spend in the air conditioned oasis (the Dubai airport) beforewe reloaded into another plane for Shanghai—this one for only 8 hours. Nearly an entire day later, we landed groggyand jetlagged, yet excited and energized for the adventure that lay ahead ofus.

We found our way to the hotel near theairport, had a cup of noodles, and hit the sack. The next morning began with a metro ride tothe center of Shanghai. I was struck bythe nuanced ways Chinese people interact in the metro. First, they are quick and ruthless to grabthe closest seat to them. In the world’smost populated city, though, I guess I can understand the need to “act quick”. Second, they make very little eye and/orsmall talk contact with one another. Thereason for this is that everyone, I mean EVERYONE, is on his or hersmartphone. And third, the people on themetro were very polite (with the exception of not giving up their seats) andrespectful of personal space.

Iva and I walked around the financialdistrict in Shanghai for a little and quickly became baffled as to why thestreets, coffee shops, and buildings were empty. I smacked my head to make sure I wasn’tdreaming, and then asked Iva if she could do some investigating to figure outwhy one of the world’s (supposedly) busiest cities was dead. When we asked one of the few men on thestreets, he laughed at us and told us it was Saturday and as a result, everything was closed in that part of town. OF COURSE. All that travellingand time-change had us thinking it was Friday morning. Feeling stupid, we ventured on to find ahotel in the city.

We came across a clean, nice place wherethe most important thing besides food—Wifi—is free and abundant. The area we’re in has it all:delicious-looking restaurants, a handful of massage parlors (after all, we are working hard and need some way torelax), and easy access to the rest of the city.

Iva and I have already taken advantage ofthis vicinity’s offerings—great food and a massage (see pictures below). They were both sinfully good. Now it’s work time. As we prepare for the lectures we areplanning on giving at 10 different universities across China, we want to hearfrom YOU. What kind of material wouldyou like us to discuss? Are there anyquestions you have about applying to American universities that you haven’tgotten answered?

All for now,

Tom and Iva
