The New Zealand Embassy in Beijing is looking for an enthusiastic person to join our team for a fixed term temporary vacancy as policy adviser/interpreter in the trade & economic team. The focus of this position is on supporting New Zealand’s trade and economic relationship with China and the applicant should be available from 11 February 2019 to the end of May 2019.


Key tasks

  • Undertake research and analysis.

  • Provide policy advice and reporting on trade/economic developments in China.

  • Build up a network of contacts in relevant Chinese agencies and institutions.

  • Assist with arranging visit programmes and meetings for New Zealand ministers and officials.

  • Provide accurate interpretation (Chinese/English and English/Chinese) at official meetings.

  • Translate official  correspondence.

 

The Embassy is looking for the following skills and capabilities:

  • High degree of oral and written proficiency in both Mandarin Chinese and English.

  • Translation and interpretation skills.

  • Relevant tertiary qualification

  • Research and analytical skills.

  • Well organised, able to manage a large workload. 

  • Strong initiative, a problem solving mentality, and ability to work independently on tasks. 

  • Flexibility and adaptability.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to work effectively with other team members.

  • Familiarity with the working environment in China, including government systems.

  • Developed computer skills (particularly MS Office, internet research capability).

  • Knowledge or experience of New Zealand an advantage.
