Ethnic Specialties
In Southern California Mexican food reigns supreme, owing to the state’s roots as a part of Mexico and the larger Spanish Empire. In numerous taco shops in the region you can find “Mexican fast-food”, such as burritos, enchiladas, tortas and nachos. If you look a little deeper, you can find mom-and-pop style outfits serving more traditional fare like menudo, pozole and tamales.

Also in Southern California (and also in the San Francisco Bay Area), you can find some of the best Asian food in the country – many of these cities and regions have significant immigrant populations. Orange County’s Little Saigon, for example, is famous for its steaming bowls of “phở” next to shops selling stuffed and crispy “bánh mì” sandwiches.

California was also the starting point of the nation’s sushi craze, which now sees a sushi bar in basically any large town or city. It is in our golden state that chefs have refined the traditional Japanese flavors for the American taste, leading to the now ubiquitous “California Roll”, which features avocado instead of fish as the main ingredient.

Food on the Go
A discussion of California’s food culture would be incomplete without mentioning its tie to California’s crazy car culture. With nearly endless freeways zigzagging across the state, and the world-famous Route 66 starting on the Southern California coast, drivers need quick and easy food options to grab after being stuck in traffic.

In-N-Out is a fast food chain that started in California, and has remained both privately owned and regional even as it slowly expands. This group of restaurants, emblazoned with a bright yellow arrow, are emblematic to the West Coast; they serve amazingly delectable burgers and shakes to thousands of people every day. If you’re a local, or just want to pretend to be one, check out the “secret menu” for treats like animal-style french fries or the neapolitan milkshake.

Plenty of other fast food chains also started out in California: Panda Express, Jack-in-the-Box, Taco Bell, Del Taco... and famously, San Bernandino was the town in which brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald opened a small burger joint in 1948 – before establishing their McDonalds franchise.

So if you’re in the mood for a quick meal on-the-go, hop in your car and hit up the local drive-thru. It might not be healthy, but you can be assured that it will be tasty.
