Some people think that students who go to universities should pay tuition fees by themselves, because it only benefits them but not the society. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

University studies are common for many people, and in today’s technology-driven world, college degrees are more important than ever before. However, questions regarding who should pay tuition fees have been highly debated, with some arguing it is a student’s responsibility since only they benefit. I personally disagree, as I think governments and schools also benefit and should also contribute to the cost of education.

Granted, individuals should be expected to pay for something that benefits them. Most students pursue a university education with the hopes of landing a nice job, or unlocking a bright career that will allow them to make more money in the future.Taking shares in the stock market as a comparison, investors contribute funds with the expectation of future returns, and greater returns require higher premiums. College education is similar in that better schools create better opportunities, and an individual can be expected to pay a premium for more prospects, just like stock in Apple or enrolment at Harvard cost more.

On the other hand, governments should pay for the benefits that a more educated society creates. It has been documented in studies that cities and communities with higher levels of education tend to have lower crime rates. Melbourne is a great example of this, a city with crime rates lower than average, and a higher number of universities per capita. As the education level of a community rises and brings benefits to a country, it is also reasonable to expect that governments chip in for the cost of tuition.

Furthermore, universities also reap rewards from students. Going back to a previous example, an education from Harvard is expected to bring more opportunities, which was certainly true for an alumnus who recently donated a record 400 million dollars to the university. As schools continue to build alumni networks that can contribute to the school financially, many universities have built large trust accounts that can fund student tuition, with Harvard’s 36 billion dollar trust as the leading example.

In conclusion, students receive the most direct benefits from a university education, and should therefore be expected to contribute to the cost of that education. However, students are far from the only party to benefit, and as society and the schools themselves also benefit, it should also be expected that governments and universities contribute to create affordable education for all.
