2017.07.15 A Task 2 Sample Essay

More and more animal species are becoming extinct as a result of human activities on land and at sea. Why is this happening and what is the solution?

Widespread human activities have driven wildlife towards extinction and endangerment which stem from various reasons and can be resolved by some basic steps.

Ignorance of the environment is centric to the problem of extinction. Firstly, development for the sake of progress is a key factor in destroying the habitat of diverse species. Mankind undertakes several activities to develop economic infrastructure at the cost of the environment. For example, mass afforestation for building cities, roads and transport facilities hinders the natural habitat as well as food supply of wild animals, due to which several species are unable to survive. Secondly, the largescale poaching for animal product consumption is also hazardous for the animal kingdom. For instance, many people in China use Shark parts for several medicines, food items as well as exquisite decorations, due to which Sharks have been continuously hunted on a large scale, which has dwindled their world population.

However, the simplest solution to this issue of extinction is awareness. Environmental education in schools and wildlife conservation campaigns in the communities will sensitise people at a young age to take up activities to protect the environment. Further, such awareness will build a more environment friendly society. For example, people who are aware of the harms of pollution, would travel more by public transport instead of personal cars to decrease the emissions of injurious gases that hinder animals’ living conditions. Similarly, more ecologically aware people would practice proper waste management instead of littering water bodies which damages the aquatic wildlife.

In conclusion, extensive human actions have resulted in extinction of several animal species which is based on obliviousness of mankind; a problem that can be overcome by spreading awareness on wildlife conservation and environmental welfare.
