The event I’d like to talk about happened in the modern history of China, which was the launch of the Shenzhou 5 spacecraft in early 2000s’. Chinese people were very proud of its success, as it was the first human spaceflight mission of the Chinese space program. If my memory serves me right（如果我没记错的话）, it took place in an early morning in October, 2003（/in the early morning of 15 Oct., 2003）. The launch site was at Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, which is located in the Gobi desert, Inner Mongolia. The only astronaut in that mission was Yang Liwei, who has become a household name （家喻户晓） in China since then. He was the first person flied on China's manned space mission and he did manage to live up to the expectation of （达到期望） his country and people. But of course he was not the only person who participated in the event, there had to be hundreds or even thousands of support people （支持人员） out there who also made tremendous contributions to the successful completion of the mission.

This is a significant event that has gone down in history （载入史册）and you can definitely find it in today’s Chinese history textbooks. Politically speaking, Shenzhou 5 mission made China the third country in the world to independently send humans into space, which not only boosted our national pride （增添民族自豪感）, but also consolidated our national status and image. In terms of technological and scientific development, it offers potential solutions to many problems that are plaguing （困扰）nowadays society, such as shortage of natural resources, environmental pollution and natural disasters. Last but not least, it gives people a deeper insight about the universe and provides them with more information about the world they live in.
