The best way to reduce crimes by young people is by teaching parents good parenting skills. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Recent news is filled with episodes of crimes being committed by the youth in different countries. Some people believe that teaching parents good parenting skills can overcome these circumstances. I somewhat agree with this belief as, in my opinion, both parenting skills as well as the legal framework and security systems are necessary for prevention of crime.

On the one hand, parents are role models for instilling respectable values in their kids that they will carry on forever. For example, when a child sees his mother who respects others’ properties and never lies, he will learn such ethics automatically and will not indulge in activities that harm others, such as theft and violence. Moreover, children can be taught the repercussions of committing a crime, the importance of the law and the duty to respect it by their parents, with which young minds can evolve into morally aware citizens.

On the other hand, ensuring good parenting skills in all families can be impractical and there are other effective ways of reducing crime rates. Issuing more stringent laws can have immediate long-term effects of preventing misconduct by youngsters. For instance, levying exorbitant fines and jail time for drunk driving has resulted in a massive decrease in the number of adolescents driving under the influence of alcohol. Similarly, installing security measures such as electronic camera systems, aid in enhancing a sense of safety and fear among the people, which further results in making people avoid committing crimes.

In conclusion, I agree to some extent that ensuring good parenting skills is the best way to reduce crimes by young people, but this needs to be supported by the implementation of strict laws and novel security measures which may be more effective and long-lasting methods for the same.
