2018.06.30 IELTS General Training Task 2

Cultures in different countries are now becoming more and more similar all around the world. Why is it happening? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Cultures across the world are becoming extensively similar which, in my opinion, stems from the increasingly globalized and open economies. This, in turn, seems to be a positive development given that it builds more harmonious multi-cultural societies.

Firstly, increased globalization and more liberal international markets are the main reason behind distinct cultures coming closer. People now have access to international entertainment and news channels that keep them updated on new cultural trends across the world due to which these trends are adapted across cultures, making them alike. For example, youngsters in Asia watch several Hollywood tv shows and movies that have sensitized many western customs such as decorating Christmas trees on Christmas Day, shopping on Mothers’ day and dressing up and eating candies on Halloween in countries such as China and India which have adopted these trends in their cultures.

Moreover, this growing cultural similarity is a positive development as it has resulted in decreased cultural barriers, building more accepting and understanding societies. Citizens from all over the world feel more comfortable with one another with the similarities between their cultures and values allowing them to build close-knit communities. For instance, when Indian students from cosmopolitan cities move to Melbourne, they feel at ease with its bustling lifestyle because their local cultural background is so similar to the culture in Melbourne.  As a result, the lack of cultural divide helps the students to settle smoothly in a city that is miles away from their home and the locals to accept the cultural differences.

In conclusion, the modern day globalized world is the primary driving force for the growing similarity between diverse cultures of the world, and this is a positive trend as it enables a healthy society regardless of the presence of multiple cultural backgrounds.
