About the exhibition

The inherent association of plot with narrative and narration is but a common misunderstanding of the original definition of plot, a late-medieval concept suggesting a patch of earth or nature separated by the artist or the craftsman as the core of their work. For medieval and renaissance cultures, the separation of the plot from its matrix was, however, never considered full and complete. The plot was identified as an access point to the pervasive and obscure beyond from which artifacts were extracted. Far from being a vehicle of narration, the plot was considered to be an anonymous germ of this pervasive beyond, capable of bringing into focus the invisible workings of the unbound plane and unfolding it’s lingering influences in the human sphere.

‘The desire to pay is essentially one untroubled by petty calculations.

It is not even dependant upon having been given, having received, bought, or stolen.

In a world of replicas the original cannot be matched in value, and real fact is often a copy of unreal fiction’.

“Call this the Romance of Disappointment” 摄于新西兰和中国,以位于深圳和杭州的两个埃菲尔铁塔为切入点。

Shot in New Zealand and China, ‘Call this the Romance of Disappointment’ takes two replica Eiffel Tower sites in Shenzhen and Hangzhou as it’s starting point. The films monologue is comprised of a number of texts from authors such as Janet Frame and Karl Marx and features footage shot in Waipukurau, New Zealand with a family friend of the artist, and a performance by artist Prairie Hatchard-McGill. Structurally sitting somewhere between documentary and collage the work motions toward the unfixed relationship between representation and reality.
